In this assignment you will research a specific IoT technology of your choice and prepare a short (10–15 minute) presentation about that technology for presentation to the class. Demonstrations are encouraged but not necessarily required, depending on the circumstances.
Broadly speaking, IoT technologies can be grouped as follows:
Embedded devices. These are (usually, but not always) small scale devices, typically equipped with sensors and/or actuators, a radio for wireless communication, and a processing element.
Radio technology. Devices in an IoT system often communicate using some sort of radio technology, typically optimized for low energy usage. In addition to the physical radio, this area includes communication protocols.
Data processing. Most IoT systems entail, in some way, a loop starting from sensing data from the real world, going through processing that date (categorizing, learning, decision making), to acting on that data via actuators connected again to the real world. Where and how that data is to be processed is often a critical issue. Should data be procesed on (potentially constrained) nodes, at a gateway interface, or in the cloud?
For this assignment, find and research an IoT technology in one or more of the categories above and prepare a presentation about it. You should focus on what problem the technology is trying to solve, when it makes sense to use it, and what pros/cons the technology has. If feasible, it might also be nice to create a demonstration of the technology that shows it in action (this might not always be possible if special equipment is needed).
